Approximately 32 billion gallons of municipal wastewater is produced in the U.S. every day (an even greater amount is produced from the Industrial industry). The energy required to treat the municipal wastewater alone by conventional aerobic treatment is equivalent to more than 20,000 barrels of crude oil per day. On the other hand, if this wastewater were treated anaerobically in a system such as the Static Granular Bed Reactor (SGBR), the energy from aeration would not be necessary and the conversion of organic matter to methane would produce the equivalent of 50,000 barrels of crude oil per day, resulting in a net gain of 70,000 barrels per day.
